PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a disk unit and a data read/write method which prevent transmission of read data to an external computer or reception of data to be written from the external computer by detecting occurrence of off-track reliably even when the off-track occurs in a final sector. SOLUTION: The data read/write method reads or writes data on a track on a disk by the unit of a sector. In obtaining a final sector identification number for identifying the final sector concerning read or write of data and reading or writing data in the final sector corresponding to the obtained final sector identification number, the identification number of a sector next to the final sector is read (S305), and it is determined whether the read identification number of the next sector is continuous with the final sector identification number. When the read identification number of the next sector is determined to be continuous (S306), the data read from the final sector is transmitted (S310) or the data to be written in the final sector is received.
