<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a transfer device for use in an intermediate transfer system which prevents false detection due to a blemish and stain on a belt surface, and also to provide an image forming apparatus using the same. <P>SOLUTION: Patterns comprising toners of respective colors for position adjustment are transferred from photoreceptors in toner image forming sections onto a transfer conveyance belt 60, light is illuminated from a sensor Sr onto the patterns of the respective colors transferred onto the belt 60, and the patterns of the respective colors are detected by the reflected light. In order to make any corrections to the respective colors, the position of the belt 60 is stored, the surface condition of the belt is checked, and when the presence of noise (abnormal place) on the belt 60 is detected by the surface check, corrected patterns are formed, while the abnormal place is avoided.
