In a mechanical seal for a rotary pump shaft 14 comprising seal members 23 and 24 in facial sealing contact with each other, the sealing surface 46 of one of the members is of non- circular form, e.g. elliptical, having inner and outer major axes 47 and 48 respectively and inner and outer minor axes 49 and 50 respectively, the outer minor axis 50 being no greater than the inner major axis 47. The surface 46 is on a projection 45 on the member 24 which is sealed to the housing 17 and prevented from rotating therein by a pin 35. The member 23 is slidably mounted on and rotates with the shaft 14 to which it is sealed by a rubber V- ring 26. A spring 31 is compressed between the ring 26 and a fitting 28 secured to the shaft and urges the member 23 towards the member 24 so that a surface 33 on an insert 32 in the member 23 is pressed into sealing contact with the surface 46. Due to the form of the latter, each part of the surface 33 is exposed during a revolution of the shaft 14. The seal is cooled by liquid circulated in the housing 17 by a pump ring 60 on the rotary member 23, the liquid being discharged through outlet 53 and returned through inlet 64 after being cooled in a heat exchanger 52. Leakage from the seal is drained to a chamber 21 communicating with a collector 42 and a vent 43.</p> |
