PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a roll for a paper machine having a ceramic layer formed on the surface of a metallic roll shell 1 interposing a foundation layer and a Hastelloy layer 2, and shielding the intrusion of a corrosive fluid to prevent the corrosion of the metallic roll shell and improve the releasability of a paper web. SOLUTION: A sealing layer 4 capable of shielding the impregnation of a corrosive fluid is formed by applying a sealing agent composed of a synthetic resin to a ceramic layer 3 in vacuum atmosphere, leaving the ceramic layer in a pressurized atmosphere at 15-45°C to impregnate the sealing agent into the ceramic layer 3 in a manner to leave fine pores formed by the ceramic particles on the surface of the ceramic layer 3, and drying the sealing agent.
