The sensor element has a measurement chamber (15) formed in a sensor body (10) having a solid electrolytic material. A diffusion barrier (21) forms a connection between the chamber and the gas and provides a diffusion resistance to gas diffusing into the chamber. A bypass diffusion barrier (26) leads to the chamber. This is accessible from at least one side of the sensor body to balance the total diffusion flow through the two diffusion barriers.
