PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer in which a size of a paper sheet or an ink sheet can be changed in the way of the printing operation. SOLUTION: This printer (a thermal transfer printer) comprises a paper tray 23 provided corresponding to each of a plurality of sizes of paper sheets 14, a paper size recognition switch 30 for detecting the size of the paper sheet 14 corresponding to the paper tray 23, an ink sheet cartridge 25 provided corresponding to each of a plurality of kinds of ink sheets 24 corresponding to the size of each of the plurality of paper sheets 14, an ink sheet recognition switch 26 for detecting the kind of the ink sheet 24 corresponding to the ink sheet cartridge 25, and a control section 22a that makes final decision of the combination of the paper sheet 14 to be printed and the ink sheet 24 after the setting of the tops of the paper sheet 14 and the ink sheet 24 is carried out.
