PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus which can detect an abnormal rotation of a scanner motor by an inexpensive mechanism. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus has an encoder pattern 31 formed at a predetermined position, and includes arithmetic processing means 23 and 24 for detecting an abnormal operation of the scanner motor 11 from the encoder pattern 31 read by a one-dimensional line sensor 10 as well as performing a scale factor error correction.
