PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of performing high-accuracy optical sensor detection, by using a backing member which can correct the deformation of a belt, and which has a simple structure. SOLUTION: In the image forming apparatus in which optical sensors 72 and 72 are arranged so as to face the surface of a belt 11 thereon, to detect toner image marks or the like on the surface of the belt, as the optical sensors, the plurality of optical sensors 72 and 72 disposed so as to face the surface of the belt 11, at locations that are different from each other in the width direction of the belt are provided. A backing member 74, which has a length extending across the entire regions of the places detected by the plurality of optical sensors and a shape such that the belt contact surface of the backing member 74, is projected toward the side of the belt, as going toward the center in the longitudinal direction is provided.
