Assay for diagnosis, risk assessment or progression monitoring of sepsis or generalized acute inflammation comprises determining the transthyretin content of a sample from a patient and comparing it with a control group. Independent claims are also included for: (1) use of transthyretin to produce antibodies for carrying out the above assay; (2) kit for an assay as above, comprising components that specifically recognize transthyretin.
