<p>An insert(20,20',20") acting a fastener is at least partly embedded in a foamed main part(16) of the component(10). An elastic intermediate part(22) surrounding at least part of the insert is more flexible than the main part so that the insert has flexible freedom of movement within the main part. The intermediate part(22) forms a flexible mounting which allows the insert(20, 20',20") movement in all direction relative to the main part(16). Flexible material is injected or foamed around the insert to form the intermediate part. Inserts may be broader at the embedded end(26) and either the main part of intermediate part flows around and grips the undercut section. Where inserts extend out of the rear side(18) of the main part the intermediate part forms a closed ring-shaped sealing lip(24) against the main part. A thermoformed film(14) covers the front side of the main part which is produced by foaming onto the rear side of the film. The insert(20) may have a threaded bolt section(28) projecting from the main part or comprises a threaded bush(20'). A long fiber injection foaming process is used to manufacture the main part. An independent claim is included for a process for manufacturing a foamed vehicle component, in particular a bodywork part(10), in which an insert is enclosed in an elastic intermediate part(22) made of a more flexible material than the main part; b) the enclosed insert is located in a tool(30,32) and foam material cast around it so that a flexible mounting is created in a cured, foamed main part.</p> |
