A method for scanning a neighbor base station in a broadband wireless access system is provided to allow a mobile station to remove the necessity for a mobile station to transmit a scanning request message and receive a scanning response message every time to obtain channel quality information by scanning neighbor base stations. A mobile station receives information related to at least one neighbor base station from a serving base station. The mobile station receives a scanning response message, which includes a scan duration, a scan iteration related to the repeated number of times of performing scanning with respect to the at least one neighbor base station, and an interleaving interval related to a time interval between scanning operations, from the serving base station.
