A navigation system having an enlarged map displaying function and a method thereof are provided to enable a driver to easily recognize the current position by matching the current position and path on aerial and satellite photographs. A navigation system having an enlarged map displaying function using an aerial photograph includes a map data base(30), an aerial photograph map data base(40), a display unit(60), and a controller(10). The map data base stores map data. The aerial photograph map data base stores aerial photograph map data corresponding to the map data. The display unit displays the aerial photograph map data or the map data based on a predetermined control. The controller displays the current position measured by a GPS(Global Positioning System) module(70) by matching with the map data, and displays aerial photograph map data corresponding to the area of the map data, when an enlarged map display event is generated.
