PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel polymerization catalyst which yields a polyester excellent in transparency.

SOLUTION: The polymerization catalyst for the polyester contains at least one chosen from aluminum and an aluminum compound as a metal-containing component and at least one phosphorous compound of the formula: (R1)n-A-C(R2)(R3)-(P=O)(OR4)(OR5) (wherein n is 0-10; A is a 6-50C aromatic ring structure or a 4-50C heterocyclic structure; R1is a 1-20C hydrocarbon group, a 1-20C alkoxy group or a halogen group; R2and R3are each independently a hydrogen atom, a 1-20C hydrocarbon group or a 1-20C alkoxy group, provided that both R2and R3are not hydrogen atoms at the same time; and R4and R5are each independently a hydrogen atom, a 1-20C hydrocarbon group or a 1-20C hydrocarbon group containing a hydroxy group or an alkoxy group).
