PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To indicate correct fast-forwarding/reversing time, and to make an exact search to a period designated from a user when playing back a compressed audio file of a VBR method. SOLUTION: When generating the compressed audio file of the VBR method such as MP3, WMA, and AAC, a VBR compression rate table describing period changes of compression rate is concatenated to the file end. When playing back the compressed audio file, a seek time to a target position is calculated using the VBR compression rate table. Since compressed bit rate information in each time interval in which the compression rate changes is obtained, the correct indication of fast-forwarding/reversing time and time search by accurate time designation are performed.
