PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a scanning line interpolation apparatus capable of eliminating improper operations such as interpolation applied to data by bridging over a vertical line and a contour of a pattern when executing interpolation processing in an oblique direction. SOLUTION: The scanning line interpolation apparatus includes: contour information calculation means 131 to 134; ternary means 141 to 144; interpolation direction determining means 151, 152, 161, 171; and an interpolation line generating means 181. The contour information calculation means 131 to 134 calculate information for receiving image data to estimate a contour of a pattern as a continuous quantity with positive and negative directions with respect to the surrounding pixels pixel for each pixel. The ternary means 141 to 144 ternalize a contour information calculation output by comparing a positive threshold value with a negative threshold. The interpolation direction determining means 151, 152, 161, 171 use ternalized data to determine an interpolation direction for producing an interpolation line. The interpolation line generating means 181 applies interpolation processing using pixels in the determined interpolation direction to input image data to produce the interpolation line.
