PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for continuing operation for a long period of time by reducing excessive torsional vibration after failure occurs in a cylinder of an engine. SOLUTION: A cross head type two stroke internal combustion engine is put under a continuous misfire failure condition where fuel injection is not made in one of the cylinders of the engine. Excessive torsional vibration caused by that is reduced or eliminated by a one or more steps mentioned below. Step (a) for keeping exhaust valves of at least one of the cylinders under the continuous misfire failure condition under a condition where the same is closed over whole engine cycle, and/or step (b) for intentionally putting at least one of cylinders not under the continuous misfire failure condition under a misfire condition.
