The liquid crystal display device has such a structure that a first substrate with a reflective layer, a liquid crystal layer, a second substrate and a polarizer are laminated in that order from the rear surface to the front surface. The liquid crystal display device includes a retardation layer in the first substrate closer on a side of the liquid crystal layer than the reflective layer, in a region where the reflective layer is not disposed or in the second substrate. The retardation layer defines more than two phase different regions in a display screen.</p>
