APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR EXTENDING CELL COVERAGE OF THE BASE STATION IN THE OFDM SYSTEM

An apparatus and a method for extending a cell coverage of a base station in an OFDM(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) system are provided to increase efficiencies of installation and operation of the system by extending the cell coverage in a suburban area having a low user density. A method for extending a cell coverage of a base station in an OFDM system includes the steps of: setting an extended cell mode(S501); checking whether data to be transmitted is in a frame(S502); allocating control information if data to be transmitted exists(S503); determining whether a symbol count is an even number or an odd number(S504); forming symbol data if the symbol count is an even number(S505); transmitting symbols to an IFFT(Inverse Fast Fourier Transform) unit(S506); increasing the symbol count at regular intervals by a timer unit(S507); and determining whether all the symbols in one frame are transmitted or not, and returning to the step S504 and repeating the next steps if all the symbols are not transmitted(S508).
