<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve video display of optimum display quality in accordance with the sort of video contents to be displayed. <P>SOLUTION: A liquid crystal display 1 controls the luminance of a backlight light source in accordance with the APL of a video signal which is measured by an APL measuring part 16. A range of the video signal whose APL is to be measured can be determined from the luminance level or the like of the video signal e.g. or can be determined on the basis of genre information included in an input video signal or OSD display information to be used when the liquid crystal display 1 performs OSD display. The drawing indicates a state that an effective video area is determined by removing upper and lower non-video areas. Consequently added information to be displayed in the case of displaying a video signal of a specific genre or added information to be displayed in an OSD can be removed and the luminance of the backlight light source can be controlled so as to obtain optimum display quality corresponding to the video signal. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT |
