METHOD FOR HYDRATION OF OLEFIN

Disclosed is a novel method for hydration of an olefin, which comprises the step of hydrating an olefin having 2 to 5 carbon atoms in the presence of a catalyst to produce an alcohol with good efficiency. More specifically, an olefin having 2 to 5 carbon atoms is hydrated at a reaction temperature ranging from 100 to 250°C in the presence of a carbon-containing solid acid catalyst which can be produced by carbonization or sulfonation of an organic substance, thereby producing an alcohol. In the method, the organic substance is preferably an aromatic hydrocarbon or saccharide, the olefin is preferably propylene or butene, and the reaction temperature employed for the hydration is preferably 120°C or higher, more preferably 150°C or higher.
