PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a focus detector capable of achieving the improvement of a focus state by accurately deciding a light source which illuminates a focus detection object. SOLUTION: In the focus detector having a sensor means equipped with a plurality of photodetector parts having different spectral sensitivity, optical information is acquired from an imaging optical system attached to the imaging apparatus in which the focus detector is mounted (step S120), and the photodetector part used for focus detection is decided, based on the optical information and the detection output from the photodetector parts (processing in and after step S160).
