PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a carbon fiber structure comprising the three dimensional network-like carbon fiber structure composed of fine carbon fibers and capable of being used as an additive suitable for improving the physical characteristics such as electric characteristics, mechanical characteristics and thermal characteristics, of solid materials such as resins, ceramics and metals, or as an additive suitable for improving the physical characteristics such as electric characteristics and thermal characteristics, of liquids such as fuels or lubricants can be produced in a good yield. SOLUTION: This method for producing the gas phase method carbon fibers by the thermal decomposition of organic carbon compounds is characterized by placing at least two organic carbon compounds as carbon sources at least in a prescribed thermal decomposition temperature region in a reactor and adjusting the partial gas pressures of the organic carbon compounds so that these organic carbon compounds can be decomposed at mutually different decomposition temperatures, and/or forming a turbulent flow in a gas flow guided to the reactor to produce a three-dimensional network-like carbon fiber structure.
