The device has a sensor (S) for detecting level of a stacking surface in an area of an upper edge of a sheet stack. A stack lifting device (6) causes vertical movement of a stack carrier (5). The stack lifting device is controlled by the sensor in such a manner that the stacking surface remains in a target level allowable by the level of the sensor. The level of the sensor is remotely adjusted using an adjusting drive (7).
