Demountable, remountable thermal insulation is intended esp. for nuclear plants and comprises panels or 'cushions' which can be fitted edge to edge to cover a pipe, vessel or the like. The rear face of the cushion adjacent to the plant component is faced with a foil impermeable to dust. This foil is of an elastic, tear-resistant, corrosion-resistant plastics material insensitive to humidity, and is pref. reinforced. The reinforcement may comprise mutually crossing filaments, or a metal or glass, knitted, woven or non-woven fabric or fleece. Filaments may include radiation-resistant plastics filaments, or metal wires. This rear facing foil may optionally also have a further foil laminated onto it, esp. a metal foil. Preferred material for the rear face foil is PTFE. A very thin but nevertheless dustproof rear foil is obtained which does not suffer difficulties in handling and excessively high thermal conductivity.
