The invention relates to a sintered-metal hard alloy having a metal structure consisting of three phases which contain at least one carbide from the group consisting of WC and (Mo, W)C crystals, a crystal of type B1 having a molar ratio Nb/(Ta + Nb) of at least 0.5 and a metal of the iron group, the crystal of the type B1 having a molar ratio N/(C + N) of from 0.1 to 0.5, and to a method for preparing the sintered-metal hard alloy, which comprises mixing the carbide, a mixed carbonitride of the general formula (TixWy) (CuNv)z, in which x + y = 1, u + v = 1, 0.7 </= x </= 0.9, 0.1 </= y </= 0.3, 0.7 </= u </= 0.9, 0.1 </= v </= 0.3 and z </= 1.0, a crystal of type B1 and a metal of the iron group in powdered form, and subjecting the mixture to a sintering operation in vacuo at from 1.3 x 10<-2> to 1.3 x 10<-4> mbar or under a nitrogen partial pressure of from 0.13 to 667 mbar.
