A wireless communication system (100, 200, 300) comprises a wireless local area network (WLAN) operably coupled to a private mobile radio system (160) and arranged such that a wireless communication unit (112, 116) is capable of private mobile communication with the private mobile radio system (160) over the wireless local area network. Preferably, the private mobile radio system is a TETRA system. The inventive concept enables the integration of WLANs with TETRA networks thereby providing a wide range of new additional capabilities and benefits to end users. |
