PURPOSE:To increase the efficiency of the process by increasing the recovery quantity of clean liquid material, by distilling a coal-liquefaction product to fractionate specified components and adding a product oil from liquefaction to the distillation residue to separate solid and liquid. CONSTITUTION:A coal-liquefaction product contg. a heavy vacuum residue having the degree of heavy fraction production P of the coal liquefaction product of 2.5 or below [wherein P is the ratio of asphaltene in the vacuum residue of the coal-liquefaction product to press asphaltene in the vacuum residue of said product (asphaltene: benzene-soluble matter; press asphaltene: tetrahydrofuran-insoluble matter minus benzene-insoluble matter)] is distilled to separate four fractions of L1 (boiling at 80-150 deg.C), L2 (boiling at 150-200 deg.C, L3 (boiling at 200-450 deg.C) and the vacuum residue. 1.5-4.0pts. said L2 is added to one pt. said vacuum residue and the separation of solid and liquid is carried out, thus recovering a liquid contg. neither ash nor unreacted coal.
