A shock absorbing device of a vehicle front side member is provided to absorb impact and suppress backward collapse of an engine room by projecting a rail member forward from a rear lower unit of the front side member, to prevent passengers from being secondarily injured due to engine room equipments pushed into a vehicle room, and to reduce a total weight and the production cost by substituting an I-type sub frame for the existing well type sub frame in a case of a small vehicle. A shock absorbing device of a vehicle front side member(10) comprises a rail member(30), a bulk head(13), a pinion gear(40), and a guide unit. The rail member is slidingly inserted into a rear lower unit(11) of the front side member and formed with a rack gear(31) on the upper surface. The bulk head is formed on the lower end of a slope unit(12) of the front side member and formed with a rack gear(14) on the lower surface. The pinion gear is rotationally mounted on the slope unit of the front side member by intermediation of a pin to be engaged with the rack gear of the bulk head and the rack gear of the rail member. The guide unit is formed at the rear lower unit to lead forward/backward movement of the rail member.
