PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image recording apparatus and method which can play recorded image signals in any order, achieve playing the recorded images in any order in a manner which has been impossible up to now, and thus achieve enjoyment in a way that has not existed before. SOLUTION: Link information data set by a user indicating order for playing is stored in a particular storage means, such as a memory incorporated in a main body; for a plurality of image data which are recorded on a storage medium in a predetermined order, a piece of the image data to be played is selected by a control means based on an instruction of the user and the link information data; and the selected image data is read from the storage medium to be displayed by an image display means. As any change in the link information data can be made by the user, and as the updated link information data can be stored with the plurality of image data in the storage medium, the plurality of image data can be played in an order set by the user at the discretion of the user, and image data management is easily made using hierarchical branching, for example.
