PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve moving image blurring in a hold type image display apparatus such as liquid crystal display elements. SOLUTION: This image display apparatus is provided with: sub-frame generation parts (5, 6) for generating a first sub-frame and a second sub-frame having a lower gradation than the first sub-frame; a histogram detecting part (2) for detecting a brightness histogram of an image signal; an image determination part (3) for determining from this histogram whether or not the input image signal is a high gradation image; and a level compensation part (4) for lowering the gradation level of the input image signal when the input image signal is the high gradation image. The gradation of the high gradation image is lowered, thereby enhancing the effect of improving the moving image blurring while maintaining a gradation difference between the first and second sub-frames.
