PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a toner excellent in triboelectric charging property, having good developing property and transferability, and capable of giving stable images over a prolonged period of time. SOLUTION: The toner has toner particles containing at least a binder resin and a colorant, wherein the toner particles are produced in an aqueous or hydrophilic medium and contain a polar resin having a polyester resin unit formed by condensation-polymerizing at least a polyhydric alcohol component and a polycarboxylic acid component. The polar resin contains at least a sulfonic acid unit and/or a sulfonic ester unit represented by formula 1, wherein Y<SB>1</SB>and Y<SB>2</SB>independently represent H, methyl, ethyl or an aromatic group; and X<SB>1</SB>represents H or a hydrocarbon group selected from methyl, ethyl or isopropyl.
