The invention relates to a method for milking animals, according to which a low pressure is periodically created and then eliminated at a pre-determined frequency in the intermediate region of a milking cup. The low pressure is maintained over a pre-determined suction phase (b) and eliminated over a pre-determined release phase (d). In this way, the ratio between the suction phase (b) and the release phase (d) changes at least once during the milking process. In a preferred form of embodiment, the first time interval does not exceed a pre-determined first threshold value, and the second time interval does not go below a pre-determined second threshold value.
