PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an original transporting device that can increase working efficiency in sorting when performing reverse-side paper printing, and can prevent an artificial mistake associated with sorting work; and to provide an image reader, an image-forming device, and a method of transporting originals. SOLUTION: The document transporting device separates a batch 2 of a plurality of originals one by one for transporting to a read position, performs transportation to the read position again by switchback after the first surface of the original is read at the read position, and discharges the original to a paper discharging stack 14 after the second surface of the original is read at the read position. The document transporting device has a control unit for unifying the discharge state of the original discharged to the paper discharge stack 14 by changing the number of times of performing the switchback.
