PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain polymers expressing excellent refractive index modulation characteristics without using liquid crystals and a monomer for obtaining the same. SOLUTION: The azobenzene monomer expressed by formula (1), the polymers having repeating units expressed by formula (2) and formula (3) and refractive index modulation characteristics, and a holographic light recording medium using the polymers are provided.
