PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately eliminate the effect of a change in the intensity of light rays emitted onto an original. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus includes: a light source for emitting light rays to a read object; a line sensor for receiving the light rays reflected from the read object and outputting data; a correction data determining section 213 for determining correction data on the basis of shading board data which the line sensor outputs by receiving the light rays reflected from a shading board whose reflection factor is predetermined; a shading correction section for using the correction data to correct original data which the line sensor outputs by receiving the light rays reflected from an original; and a gradation characteristic detection section 234, a gradation characteristic comparison section 233, and a selector 232 for revising the correction data used by the shading correction section on the basis of the original data which the line sensor outputs by receiving the light rays reflected from the original.
