Extraction of atelopeptide collagen (I) from a collagenotous source by microbial treatment, comprises: treating the collagenous source with a commercially available strain of Staphylococcus aureus(ATCC 29213) in log phase and cultured at neutral pH, for 90-120 hours at 20-40[deg]C and pH of 6.8-8 to give collagen fibers; treating the collagen fibers with known disinfectant (500-3000% (w/v)) followed by aqueous washing to give decontaminated collagen fibers (II); and drying (II) by known method at 40[deg]C, followed by sterilization by conventional method to give (I).
