PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To generate a pump loss immediately according to the deceleration demand of an internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: A control device of an internal combustion engine is provided with a variable valve mechanism to change the valve opening performance of an exhaust valve. In decelerating the internal combustion engine, the pump loss is increased by controlling the valve opening performance of the exhaust valve. For example, the control device of the internal combustion engine is provided with an opening changing means to change the opening of a suction throttle valve. While the internal combustion engine is under a normal operation with the fuel supply stopped, the opening of the suction throttle valve is enlarged to reduce the pump loss. On the contrary, the deceleration is requested in this state, the valve opening timing of the exhaust valve is advanced to increase the pump loss immediately. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
