The invention relates to a substrate covered with a complex structure based on a metal having an antimicrobial activity and on a semiconductor oxide having a photocatalytic activity. The structure is provided in the form of a composite film containing no greater than 5 % by weight of metal having an antimicrobial activity. A composite film of this type is also used in a method for protecting or decontaminating a substrate vis-à-vis microorganisms.
