In a remote control mechanism for a motorvehicle layshaft gear-box providing four forward speeds and reverse, comprising a doubleacting recuperative hydraulic system in which a ball-mounted hand lever 1 directly selects amongst three rods 5, 6, 7, each formed as a double-acting hydraulic piston which displaces liquid through pipes e.g. 12, 13 to actuate a corresponding gear-shift plunger, e.g 16, each double-acting piston rod 5, 6, 7 has retained at each end for limited axial freedom on annular recuperation valve 18 which, whenever the hand lever 1 is stationary, permits flow of liquid between a reservoir 4 and the corresponding pipe-line 12 or 13 through a groove 21 in the rod and a clearance at the bore of the valve 18. The drag of the valve 18 in its cylinder causes the valve 18 to lag and close upon movement of the appropriate piston rod 5, 6 or 7 by the hand lever 1. Specification 735,664 is referred to.
