PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel method and apparatus for crushing rock, structure and the like, which can crush rocks and the like by taking advantage of the pressure of gas generated by instantaneously decomposing ammonium nitrate as a single substance, is exempt from the Explosives Control Law, and is excellent in freedom of execution. SOLUTION: In this crushing method, ammonium nitrate as a main crushing agent 6 was filled into a loading hole H provided in an object R to be crushed. A heating agent 5, which can cause a thermit reaction is disposed adjacent to the main crushing agent 6. An ignition tool 4 is disposed adjacent to the heating agent 5, and the loading hole H is closed. The ignition tool 4 is energized to cause a thermit reaction in the heating agent 5 and thus to allow ammonium nitrate to be decomposed within the loading hole H by taking advantage of reaction heat of a very high temperature generated by the reaction. The object R to be crushed is crushed by the pressure of the decomposition gas. This crushing method can decompose ammonium nitrate rapidly and reliably, and rapidly increasing the pressure within the loading hole H can realize crushing of rocks, structures and the like in a safe, reliable, and inexpensive manner.
