VIDEO DISPLAY SYSTEM

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To display a screen for received video signals on the video display device whose format display ratio is different from a format display ratio of the screen for the received video signals.

SOLUTION: The video display system comprises: a video display means (244) having a first width-to-height format display ratio; a video signal receiving means (206) of regulating a screen with a second width-to-height format display ratio which is smaller than the first format display ratio; a memory (350); and a means (320) of decimating a sample of the video signals in both horizontal and vertical directions asymmetrically, and asymmetrically compressing both the width and the height of the screen expressed by the sample. The asymmetrically compressed screen is stored as a synthesized screen in the memory after that. The system has a means (240) of mapping the stored, asymmetrically compressed, synthesized screen on the video display means.
