The multimode fiber amplifier (18) includes a core (22) configured to receive an input image (14) that includes a plurality of input beams spanning a range of incidence angles and to propagate at least some of the input beams as different ones of a plurality of transverse modes along the core (22) . The multimode fiber amplifier (18) provides an amplified image (26) at an output facet (28) thereof corresponding to the input image (14) . A focal plane detector (36) includes an array of detectors arranged to receive different portions of the amplified image (26) .
