PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily and accurately estimate the state quantity of an internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: An in-cylinder temperature correction part 62 sets a temporary in-cylinder temperature TIVCwhen an intake valve is closed and corrects the temporary in-cylinder temperature TIVC. An NOx concentration estimating part 64 estimates an NOx concentrationζ0in exhaust gases by using an NOx concentration estimation model according to the histories of the temporary in-cylinder temperature TIVCwhen the intake valve is closed and the detected pressure p of in-cylinder gases. The in-cylinder temperature correction part 62 so corrects the temporary in-cylinder temperature TIVCwhen the intake valve is closed that the absolute value of the deviationΔζbetween the estimated concentrationζ0of NOx and the detected concentrationζis reduced. An in-cylinder temperature estimation part 52 estimates the temporary in-cylinder temperature TIVCwhen the absolute value of the deviationΔζbetween the estimated concentrationζ0of NOx and the detected concentrationζis equal to or less than a set amount as an estimated in-cylinder temperature when the intake valve is closed.
