Disclosed is a method for managing the cooling of an information handling system, such as a server or blade computer. The information handling system has a housing, such as a rack or cabinet, in which the processing elements or components of the system are placed. Placed inside the housing is a cooling fan near the processing elements to provide a cooling airflow. The fan is controlled by a management processor that selects the speed of the fan based on the environmental conditions detected and a cooling (or thermal) profile of the information handling system. The cooling profile of the system is provided by a cooling profile engine that can adjust the profile when a change to the processing elements or the hardware configuration in the housing is detected. When a new element is added the profile may be adjusted by obtaining the profile of the new element either from the element or from an online database eg from the server network. |
