The device has a grinding and polishing band (14) that is guided by a drive roller (2) over deflection rollers (10-13). An operation area that serves for pressing the band at a work piece is provided between two rollers that are arranged in a distance. A free space is provided between the areas closing the rollers. The band is tightened and is locked by a spring clamp (8). Tape guiding plates (22, 23) are provided at the rollers, where the plates guide the rollers in a lateral manner and prevent jumping of the rollers.
