Described is a public telephone for managing and paying services in-situ, said telephone including a microphone, a handset, at least an input device for the input of data useful for selecting the service managing function or the telephone call generic function, at least an output device for displaying the selected function, at least a communication interface for allowing the telephone call generic function to be performed, at least a communication interface with at least a service provider for allowing the service managing function to be performed; and at least a device for receiving payments of charges performed by the service managing function or the telephone call generic function. Methods for operating the inventive public telephone are also described.
