To provide a novel compound which satisfies characteristics required for an optical anisotropic material and which is excellent in durability against blue laser light, a liquid crystal composition containing the compound and an optical anisotropic material employing the liquid crystal composition. A compound represented by the following formula (1): <?in-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="lead"?>CH<SUB>2</SUB>-CR<SUP>1</SUP>-COO-(E<SUP>1</SUP>)<SUB>m</SUB>-Cy-Y-Cy-E<SUP>2</SUP>-R<SUP>2</SUP> (1)<?in-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="tail"?> provided that the symbols in the formula have the following meanings. R<SUP>1</SUP>: a hydrogen atom or a methyl group; R<SUP>2</SUP>: a C<SUB>1-8 </SUB>alkyl group; Y: -OCO- or -COO-; m: 0 or 1; E<SUP>1 </SUP>and E<SUP>2</SUP>: each independently a 1,4-phenylene group or a trans-1,4-cyclohexylene group; and Cy: a trans-1,4-cyclohexylene group; provided that the above 1,4-phenylene group and the trans-1,4-cyclohexylene group may be such that a hydrogen atom in each group may be substituted by a fluorine atom, a chlorine atom or a methyl group.
