Production of pigmented thermoplastic material (I) is carried out in stages by (1) grinding an aqueous suspension with about 10-75 wt.% solids, which contains flow enhancer(s) in the form of a dissolved salt and the pigment, under alkaline conditions in a high-energy feed mill with grinding balls of diameter 0.2-2 mm and (2) conversion to (I) by a flush process with a thermoplastic material in a kneader or extruder at elevated temperature and pH initially 7 or less. An independent claim is included for (I) produced by this process.
