PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid discharge failure detector which surely detects a liquid discharge failure by change of a light receiving amount of a light receiving element in a simple structure and in such a constitution that light emitted from a light emitting element in a direction orthogonal to a liquid discharge direction, is received by the light receiving element. SOLUTION: On a light axis 31 from a light emitting element 30 to a light receiving element 40, the liquid discharge failure detector comprises: throttling members such as a collimator lens 32 and a slit which throttle a light beam 34 emitted from the light emitting element 30 such as a semiconductor laser or an LED; and a beam stopper 33 which prevents the light throttled by the throttling members from entering the light receiving element 40 as it is.
