<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water-based pigment dispersion excellent in stability of pigment dispersion at room temperature and high temperature and having arithmetical average particle size and an ink composition able to attain stable discharge of ink for a long time in not only piezo method but in thermal method requiring stability of the ink at high temperature and excellent in fixability to paper. <P>SOLUTION: The pigment dispersion comprises (A) an organic pigment, (B) a pigment derivative in which a sulfonic acid group is introduced to the organic pigment and/or the sulfonic group is introduced to a pigment having the same chemical structure as that of the organic pigment, (C) a phenol resin expressed by general formula (1), (D) water and (E) a water soluble organic solvent.
